Maybelline Limited Edition Color Whisper Collection

I'm just going to start this review off by saying that I don't really care for the Maybelline Color Whisper line. The formula is drying on my lips, and I'm not a huge fan of the greasy feeling finish. With that being said, I decided to give them a second chance. Why? I have no idea. Maybe because Maybelline is one of my favorite brands at the drugstore and I felt the need to really give these another try. Plus I love limited edition collections!

I came across this new, limited edition collection unintentionally at Walgreens the other day. I decided to make these the colors that I would try to 'give the Color Whisper another chance' and I almost wished I hadn't..because the formula on these colors feels worse on my lips than the original ones! How is that possible you ask? Well, let me explain..

The entire collection consists of six completely new shades, which are limited edition.

I was really disappointed in the lack of color selection in this collection. Most of the shades here are are muted nudes/pinks with a metallic, glittery finish. I think that Maybelline could have gave us more variety here, and honestly I just think most of these shades are unflattering on the lips.

Swatches from left to right: Pink Bombshell, Plum Setter, Strike A Rose,Coral Tease, Nude Night Out, and Red Around Town.

I really hated the metallic, glittery finish that most of these had. It's definitely not as noticeable in these swatches as it is on the lips. Pink Bombshell is a frosty light brownish-pink. Plum Setter is a frosty muted deep purple. Strike A Rose is a metallic/frosty light pink.  Coral Tease is a metallic orangey brown. Nude Night Out is a light orangey brown, it's very similar to Coral Tease. Red Around Town is a bright orange red, it doesn't contain any glitter and I

Claims:"Pure color pigments suspended in a weightless gel. No heavy waxes or oils."
Finish/Texture: Red Around Town has a shiny/cream finish, while the rest all have a metallic/frosty finish. Red Around Town felt a bit greasy and the rest all felt gritty, due to the large glitter chunks. I really couldn't believe they were lipsticks, it felt like lip scrub!
Lasting Power: These only last about four hours before they start to fade away.
Scent: I didn't really notice a strong scent with any of these, but there was a subtle vanilla.
Packaging: The packaging is a long, skinny plastic tube. It's cute and stays in place securely, I actually adore the tube!
Price/Availability: I paid $7.50 each at Walgreens

Likes:
  • Cute packaging
  • Red Around Town is a nice color
Dislikes:
  • The glitter caused the lipsticks to have a gritty texture
  • Each lipstick has a greasy/slippery feel
  • This collection is very frosty/glittery (which might be a like for some)
  • Limited edition
  • Poor staying power
  • There was no theme/ no name to this collection at all, which is a bit odd
Overall:
This collection was strange. There was no theme, goal, or color scheme here.. other than frost. There was no name for this collection on the display, all it said was limited edition and the name of the product. I've seen it at multiple Walgreens stores and they all say the same thing. I have no idea what Maybelline was trying to achieve here, but whatever it was left me feeling confused.

I really don't like frosty finish lipsticks, especially when they have huge glitter chunks in them. I would have liked these better if they had maybe some lipsticks that were frosty, some glittery, and some cream. Instead it was just a mess of both, and one cream! What is that?

These colors were pretty to me, it was mainly the finish and texture that turned me off. These had a gritty feeling to them, which honestly felt like a lip scrub. It was so weird and almost laughable. Who wants to put something scratchy on their lips? I know that I don't. The wear time is ok, and the packaging is nice, but the texture is awful. The frosty finish with glitter chunks isn't my style.

I felt like this collection was put together and released without any thought. I'm still not really a fan of the Color Whispers, but I'm happy that I gave them another try.

  1. Such a pity you didn't like them, I thought the swatches looked quite nice! They looked like they had such potential too!

    1. Yes, the swatches do look better than they actually are. The shimmer/glitter doesn't show up on the skin nearly as much as it does on the lips. They are really just too frosty.

  2. Thanks for sharing these! I would've definitely been suckered in and buying these but yeah i'm not impressed with the color selection either. Hopefully they come up with something better, or come out with colors for a different line.

  3. I really like the red shade, it looks so vivid and lovely! Shame about the texture though, it's funny because everyone in the UK is lusting after the whispers.. and I don't even know why?! Think it's a case of what you can't have you want! xx

  6. Hi Hollie!

One night I was searching for lipsticks' reviews and I came across to your blog and let me tell you - I like it, better yet, I love it. I have a huge obsession for lipsticks (even if I don't show it often!) and I feel that we are so muck look alike.

So I didn't want to miss a post, I follow you via GFC and bloglovin, like you on Facebook, just to make sure. :) You do a great job here!

It is such a bummer that the new Color Whisper lipsticks from Maybelline were not suitable for you. I personally love their Color Sensational Vivids collection, one of the best so far.

Just keep up on coming the reviews for lipsticks, I am so excited to read them. If you would have the time and pleasure to check my little blog, I would really appreciate it.

  7. Oh no, another disappointment! I dislike frost finish lipsticks as well - so these would not be anything I'd be gravitating toward. The red colour is quite nice though.

  8. I'm not a fan of the texture either, such a shame! I also would have to pick the Revlon Lip Butters over the Whispers xx

  9. The red color is really pretty. I have a new obsession for red lipsticks, don't know why. Maybe it's because I recently tried a red lipstick.
    Have a nice day!
